Tan Shin Yi, Ellie

L.L.B (Hons) Oxford Brookes University Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP)

At first glance, her poise and elegance may first capture attention, but it’s her relentless dedication, meticulous attention to detail, razor-sharp analytical mind, unwavering compassion and fierce determination that leave a lasting impression on both clients and adversaries alike.

Admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 2019, Ellie has built a distinguished practice in General Civil Litigation practice, with particular expertise in Family Law. Her rare blend of grace and grit makes her stands out as an exceptional matrimonial lawyer. In high-conflict divorces and emotionally charged legal battles, clients need more than just a lawyer—they need an advocate who provides emotional support,  reassurance, unwavering support and fierce determination. Ellie doesn’t just represent her clients; she empowers them in their most vulnerable moments. In the high-stakes arena of family law - where outcomes alter lives forever, she stands as both shield and sword for her clients.

She had successfully defended an Indian Father who was detained In the lockup due to fabricated allegations of misconduct toward his son - claims his ex-wife maliciously weaponized in an attempt to restrict his visitation rights to minimal supervised access. Through skilled advocacy and meticulously crafted written submissions, she secured a decisive victory, safeguarding her client’s parental rights.

She also fought for a Vietnamese mother who face losing custody of her child due to her foreign nationality, unemployment status and alleged violation of existing custody order granted in favour of her.  Despite opposing counsel’s aggressive litigation tactics- including a barrage of applications - Ellie  successfully defended against each challenge, ultimately securing her client’s custody to her child.

Recently, she took on an urgent case for a critically ill cancer patient scheduled for high-risk surgery the following day. Against all odds, Ellie secured the divorce filing and court order within just 48 hours.

Over her five (5) years of practice, Ellie has handled more than a hundred uncontested and contested divorce or matrimonial matters such as annulment of marriage, registration of foreign divorce, guardianship and custody, visitation and rights of access, maintenance claims, division of matrimonial assets, disputes involving parental abduction, domestic violence, commencing or defending variation applications, injunction, enforcement of court order and adoption. She has represented numerous high-profile clients in divorce proceedings including prominent public figures, business leaders and high-net-worth individuals.

Beyond Family Law, Ellie has been actively practising civil and commercial litigation. She represented one of the Southeast Asia’s leading marine engineering company in a legal dispute and successfully secured a favourable outcome for her client. Currently, she is part of the legal team led by firm partner Mr. Dixon Eng Yuh Pei, in representing the former Director-General of Health, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Hisham bin Abdullah in matters involving false endorsement and passing off.
